Mechanistic studies on transformations of ICM-containing Fe0 oxides
Within the REMEDI project, Ashfeen Ubaid Khan holds the role of ESR 5. The main aim of this project is to analyze the transformations of Fe-containing iodinated contrast media agents (ICMs) in different environmental matrices in relation to soil and water chemistry.
Within this research framework, Ashfeen will undertake both theoretical and practical investigations to analyse the stability, colloidal behaviour and transformation of Fe-containing ICMs by the means of ageing experimentation at laboratory scale and in situ field studies. The transformation products regarding their usage for X-ray imaging will be investigated. During theoretical studies Ashfeen will introduce molecular modelling to probe the mechanism of adsorption and behaviour of ICMs and iron geomaterials while using techniques such as DFT, QSAR and reactive transport in porous media.
In collaboration with ESR1 and ESR2, Ashfeen will be working on the speciation analysis of ICMs and Fe-containing geomaterials in soil and sediments.
Moreover, secondments will be carried out with non-academic partners in Spain and Italy to augment and deepen the research outlook using a multidisciplinary approach: 1. Investigating transformation products of ICM-containing Fe phases in soil; 2. Modelling of the fate of transformation products of ICMs in a soil-water system.
