Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics - Warwick student chapter

Based in Warwick's Mathematics department, our main aim is to organise seminars, workshops and events for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. These talks are presented by academics in applied mathematics as well as people working in industry. This provides a great opportunity for students to informally meet researchers from various disciplines and backgrounds.

Our chapter also provides a link with the international SIAM community allowing members to benefit from the various opportunities offered by SIAM.

Students and postdocs of any department who are interested in Industrial Mathematics and its Applications are encouraged to join the chapter here. Membership is free and members will be eligible for free membership to SIAM.

Warwick SIAM Student Conference - November 2015

The second Warwick SIAM Student Conference of the year will take place on 25th November 2015.

We aim to give insight into what careers are available in mathematical and statistical areas, both industrial and academic, and provide networking opportunities for those involved.

We welcome speakers from TRL and Spectra Analytics to speak about uses and applications of mathematics and statistics in transport and data analysis industries. We also welcome two graduate students from the mathematics department at Warwick to give an accessible overview of their research in applied mathematics.

Full details can be found here.

SIAM Talk: Applied Mathematics in Engineering - Perspectives on Numerical Modelling & Optimisation

The Warwick SIAM chapter welcomes Tyler London from TWI Ltd to talk about applied mathematics in engineering.

Tyler London is a Principal Project Leader in the Integrity Management Group at TWI Ltd, an international R&D and consultancy organisation specialising in materials joining technology and structural integrity. He joined TWI in 2010 after obtaining an MSc in Mathematical Modelling & Scientific Computing at Oxford.

The talk will be held in MS.05 from 4pm to 5pm on Monday 9th November (note the unusual time and room).

Abstract:

One of the key drivers in computational engineering is structural integrity: ensuring the safe design, performance and durability of components subjected to a range of operating conditions. Structural integrity assessments are routinely carried out to assess the acceptability of cracks in welded components; to design lightweight structures with optimal mass distribution; to predict the safe operating life of equipment subjected to random excitation, and to inspect or detect the presence of defects that may lead to failure. This talk will give an overview of examples and case studies where applied mathematics has been used in the oil & gas, aerospace and energy industries and will cover topics such as finite element analysis, topology optimisation, inverse methods and fluid dynamics.

Warwick SIAM Student Conference - October 2015

The first Warwick SIAM Student Conference of the year will take place on 28th October 2015.

We aim to give insight into what careers are available in mathematical and statistical areas, both industrial and academic, and provide networking opportunities for those involved.

We welcome speakers from Brainlabs and Codemasters to speak about uses and applications of mathematics in advertising and gaming industries. We also welcome two graduate students from the mathematics department at Warwick to give an accessible overview of their research in applied mathematics.
