BSc Biological Sciences

The University of Birmingham

I graduated from The University of Birmingham with a degree in Biological Sciences with Genetics in 2007.

During my undergraduate degree I took modules in a variety of biological areas, including:

  • First Year
    • Molecules of Life
    • Reproduction and Development
    • Introduction to Evolution
    • Essential Cell Biology
    • Genes, Genomes and Heredity
    • Plant and Environmental Biology
    • Microbiology
    • Core Skills in Biosciences
  • Second Year
    • Molecular Biology and it's Applications
    • Evolution
    • Core Skills
    • Genes and Genomes: From Microorganisms to Man
    • Animal Biology: from Molecules to Environment
    • Molecular Cell Biology
    • Field Course: Terrestrial Ecology, undertaken in Spain
  • Third Year
    • Eukaryotic Gene Expression
    • Prokaryotic Gene Expression
    • Omics: Exploiting Genomic Data
    • Integrative Whole-Organism Biology

Final Year Project

  • My final year project was undertaken in Brazil over a 3-week period, where we did multiple animal dissections (mouse, frog, lizard, pigeon) and carried out animal physiology experiments in the specialised labs at UNESP University over a 10-day period.
  • My project looked at 'The Combined Effects of Hypoxia and Hypercapnia on Tegu Lizard Ventilation.'
  • This project was physiology based, looking at how Tegu lizards adapt the frequency and depth of their breathing when subjected to varying levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
  • I greatly enjoyed this project, as I had the opportunity to work in a completely new environment and on a topic that was very new to me!
