Thursday 9 September saw the official opening of the newly built Ion Cyclotron Resonance Laboratory at Millburn House, which houses state-of-the-art Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometers.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled by Professor Fred McLafferty from Cornell University, one of the most highly regarded Chemists in the field of mass spectrometry. Also in attendance were Professors Keith Jennings, Nico Nibbering, Charles Wilkins, and Jim Scrivens, four very highly regarded academics within the field.

Instrument manufacturers were also well represented at the opening. Dr. Ian Sanders (Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Applications at Bruker Daltonics) and Dr. Matthias Witt were joined by colleagues from Bruker Daltonics, manufacturers of the 12 T solariX FTICR housed within the new laboratory. Dr. Mark Allen (Managing Director Europe for Advion BioSciences) represented Advion BioSciences as the supplier of a TriVersa NanoMate, an automated ion source which is to be used with the solariX.

Professor Peter O'Connor, his research group, and Dr. Mark Barrow (all from the Department of Chemistry) were present as the users of the new Ion Cyclotron Resonance Laboratory. The Department of Chemistry was further represented by Dr. David Josey and Ken Westwood, and Robert Wilson and Bob Gamble attended on behalf of the Estates Office, which oversaw the construction of the purpose-built facility.

Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers are instruments for determining the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of ions based upon the cyclotron frequency of the ions orbiting in a fixed magnetic field.
