Amanda Vuong

n202903581_30944714_2353.jpgI graduated in 2007 from University College London with a 2:1 BSc Honours degree in Chemistry with Mathematics. During my undergraduate degree I particularly enjoyed topics in quantum mechanics and numerical methods in chemistry modules on my course.

Since graduating I have worked at Verona Pharma plc, a biotechnology company dedicated to discovering new drugs for the treatment of chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and COPD.

I decided to progress academically by doing the MSc AS:MIT programme at the University of Warwick. The first half of the year was taught courses and I was particularly interested in electrochemistry and NMR. The second half of the year was a research project.

Research Project: Development and Analysis of Graphene-Based Organic Solar Cells

The standard electrode material used is indium-tin-oxide (ITO). Indium has its downfalls, of being expensive, fragile, lack of flexibility and a limited supply of it. Therefore, the search for a suitable substitute of an inexpensive alternative is necessary. The proposed material in this case is graphene, which is flexible and transparent; it can be used in transparent organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices.
