Let’s talk Womanthology
In April 2016, WMG was pleased to welcome Fiona Tatton, Founder and Editor-in-Chief from Womanthology. Fiona gave an inspirational speech called ‘Advancing gender balance in higher education: Introduction to Womanthology,’ to an audience of invited guests from across the University of Warwick.
Also speaking at the event was Sarah Dickinson who is Head of Equality Charters at Athena SWAN. Sarah delivered a thought-provoking speech about the Athena SWAN Charter that was developed in conjunction with the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) to advance the representation of women in STEM disciplines in higher education and research.
The session was chaired by WMG’s Professor of Operation and Supply Chain Strategies, Jan Godsell, who said: “A key message from Fiona was that it is easy to be authentic when you do what you love.
“It was clear from the authenticity of all our speakers that they love what they do, and their activities and ideas are instrumental to advancing gender balance not only in Higher Education but in broader society.”
Celebrating National Women in Engineering Day
WMG was pleased to welcome 22 girls from the WMG Academy for Young Engineers, to a special ‘Magnificent Women and their Flying Machines’ event, in celebration of National Women in Engineering Day.
The event was set up by the Women's Engineering Society (WES) to commemorate the work of early women engineering pioneers during the First World War. At the workshop the girls were tasked with designing and building aircraft wings, taking inspiration from the work of these women.
Shaheen Charlwood, Senior Teaching Fellow at WMG, explained: “The event was designed to inspire the next generation of female engineers, and in turn encourage them to consider engineering as a possible career.
“Some girls see engineering as a non-traditional career choice, and by showing them through our outreach activity that women have in fact been successfully carrying out these roles for 100 years, we can begin to change their perceptions.”
Supporting Women in STEM
Shaheen Charlwood, Senior Teaching Fellow, was thrilled to represent WMG at the official opening of the new WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) HQ at the Leeds College of Building by HRH The Princess Royal.
Shaheen joined leading figures in industry and education, to hear a series of inspirational speeches from WISE Chief Executive Helen Wollaston, Commercial Director HS2 Beth West. The guest of honour, HRH the Princess Royal, unveiled a commemorative plaque. Each speech focused on girls and women studying and building careers in science, technology, engineering and manufacturing (STEM), and the need to improve links between schools and employers.
Dame Julie Moore Inaugural Lecture
WMG was delighted to host the inaugural lecture of Dame Julie Moore. Professor Lord Bhattacharyya welcomed Dame Julie Moore who has been appointed as an Honorary Professor at the University.
Over a 100 people attended Dame Julie's lecture which focused on the use of IT in healthcare. She specifically showcased how University Hospital Birmingham has improved the quality of its service provision by taking inspiration from the car industry.
The inspiring lecture highlighted that quality is very much at the heart of University Hospital Birmingham. By using data properly and being transparent, their patients are benefiting from 'Best in Care'.
