Ehman Altaf, Apprentice Technician

At school

At school everyone would always say how smart I was and would ask me to solve problems for them. I never really considered myself ‘smart’ I think I was just quite technical and good at vocational things. After my GSCEs I tried A Levels, but they weren’t really for me so I decided to study a two year BTEC in engineering at The WMG Academy for Young Engineers. This was definitely more up my street and after successfully completing the course I applied for the apprenticeship at WMG.

Technology drives most developments out there and working at WMG allows me to be a part of that, I am doing what I do best and it is benefiting the future of businesses. WMG offers many development opportunities such as the themed lunches where people are able to transfer knowledge which I have found very useful. The diversity of WMG has opened up my eyes to so many different prospects in so many different fields.

Determination

It has definitely been a steep learning curve for me, going from an all girls school to being the only female apprentice in a group of 11. I am a determined person and learning how to get my point across is all part of my personal development process. I have never really seen gender as an obstacle to my success.

My role model

My German GCSE teacher was a massive inspiration to me. In high school he conducted an assembly promoting careers in engineering and encouraging females to consider the field. It certainly made me think about what I wanted to do in the future. He later became the Head of the WMG Academy for Young Engineers and he continued to support and inspire me throughout my studies, giving me the confidence to follow my aspirations and to never give up.

Advice to others

I would say to try and not think about gender too much. It shouldn’t be seen as an obstacle to any goal or aspiration. If you want to do something, and believe you can then don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Having a positive attitude has definitely helped me to get to where I am today.
