Garry Clamp's story

Profile"The whole experience has made me realise that there is nothing you cannot achieve if you are willing to put in the time and dedication."
Garry Clamp, Quality Leader, BAE Systems Maritime Submarines

I undertook a four year electrical apprenticeship and worked as an electrician before joining the Quality Assurance department at BAE Systems in 2005.

BAE Systems already had a relationship with WMG and my manager had undertaken a similar qualification and helped me to realise the opportunities for development that existed. I originally intended to take just the Post-experience Certificate in Engineering Business Management (Master’s Foundation Programme), but found the whole process very rewarding and am now halfway through the MSc programme, working towards my full Master’s degree.

In my current role I ensure quality hold points and milestones are implemented, audit programmes are established and completed and actions are managed accordingly, as well as quality planning and managing third party certification for various sites both within and outside the UK. Studying at WMG has helped me identify and tap into my capabilities. Quality cuts across the whole business, so having an understanding of the different disciplines and business topics has made me more effective in my role and furthered my career within the business.

I would urge anyone who is interested to pursue this to fulfil their full potential. It is also important not to underestimate the learning you can achieve through networking with the other students and business representatives on the course.

The whole experience has made me realise that there is nothing you cannot achieve if you are willing to put in the time and dedication.
