High Value Manufacturing Catapult

HVM CatapultThe Catapult centres are a network of world-leading centres designed to transform the UK’s capability for innovation in specific areas and help drive future economic growth. The HVM Catapult is focused on advanced manufacturing, with 7 centres across the UK, each with their own specialisms. We offer access to world-class equipment, expertise and collaborative opportunities. The HVM Catapults work with manufacturing businesses of all sizes and from all sectors to help accelerate the activity between technology concept and commercialisation.

WMG centre HVM Catapult

The WMG centre HVM Catapult focuses on providing solutions for Low Carbon Mobility. We deliver value to UK manufacturing by de-risking innovation in the following areas:

  • Lightweighting
  • Advanced Propulsion Systems
  • Intelligent Vehicles
  • Energy Storage and Management

Working with transport sector partners in automotive, commercial, off-road (agricultural and construction), rail and marine, we are enabling and accelerating the development of new technologies, products and processes.

Lightweight materials

The Lightweight Technologies Centre of Excellence aims to design and manufacture lightweighting solutions in response to the low-carbon agenda. Our research covers multi-materials and includes the design and modelling of novel structures, advanced machining techniques using ultrasound and cryogenics, high-speed, low-cost composites manufacturing, additive layer manufacturing and metrology and 3D visualisation capabilities. Advanced Propulsion Systems

Our research in Advanced Propulsion Systems focuses on increasing electrification and hybridisation of all vehicle types. Facilities available via the HVM Catapult include systems modelling and simulation, control systems, HiL Testing, electric machines, power electronics and electrical systems. More information>>

Intelligent Vehicles

Our research in Intelligent Vehicles is underpinned by a key facility: a drive-in, driver-in-the-loop multi-axis simulator. The simulator has a world-leading capability to fully emulate the external environment that a vehicle would encounter on road, for repeatable testing and verification. Our intelligent vehicles research brings together several capability areas such as Complex Electrical Systems, Communications, Supply Chains and Cyber Security. This multidisciplinary approach enables us to understand the full scope of research challenges that will affect the practical implementation of this new technology and build research programmes with industrial partners to address real-world challenges. Energy Storage and Management

Our Energy Innovation Centre is at the forefront of the development of new battery chemistries, employing some of Europe’s most experienced electro-chemical cell and battery development engineers and chemists. The Centre includes an open access Battery Pilot Line, battery characterisation laboratory, abuse testing chambers plus an electric/hybrid drives testing facility.

We have recently been awarded £20m as part of the UK Government’s £60m Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) programme which will significantly expand our facilities. ERA Research at WMG will support innovation and growth in the automotive sector, by enabling technologies in energy storage and energy machines, drives and systems. Particular areas of focus are: new battery chemistries, electro mechanical behaviour, second life applications, super-capacitors and high rate chemistries.
