Inspiring Woman of The Month: Kristalina Georgieva
Kristalina Georgieva is a Bulgarian economist and currently serves as Managing Director of the IMF, making her the second women to lead the organization since its inception. She earned her Master’s in Political Economy and Sociology, and her Ph.D. in Economic Science from the University of National and World Economy in Bulgaria, where she also served as Associate Professor between 1977 and 1993.
When asked about the struggles she faced throughout her professional journey, Kristalina said she “worked harder than any man just to be equal”. As a professor, she would take more classes, specifically classes of her male colleagues when they were on vacation. At first, she did not believe in advocating for gender inequality, until she realized that this approach is holding women back as society cannot be gender blind and expect women to receive equal opportunities as their male counterparts.
Prior to her role at the IMF, Kristalina held many roles at the World Bank before being appointed CEO in 2017, including Director for Sustainable Development and Director for Environment. She is widely recognized for making the bank the strongest it’s ever been financially, where she secured the largest funding increase in the Bank’s history that boosted the organization’s capital by $13 billion. Kristalina also worked at the European Commission, serving as Vice President for Budget and Human Resources in which she oversaw the EU’s $175 billion budget and was at the forefront of the EU’s response to the 2015 Euro Area debt and refugee crisis.
Kristalina’s work earned her many accolades. In 2010, she was “European of the Year” and “Commissioner of the Year” by European Voice in recognition for her leadership in the EU’s response to humanitarian crises.
BAME Women in Economics: Anu Aiyengar
Anu Aiyengar is an Indian finance professional currently serving as Global Co-Head of Mergers and Acquisitions at J.P. Morgan. Anu received her undergraduate degree in Economics and Computer Science from Smith College and her MBA from Vanderbilt; and later became the first woman or POC ever to head a global merger shop on Wall Street.
However, Anu’s journey was far from easy, in 1999 she interviewed for a position at a major Wall Street bank in which her interviewer commented “wrong gender, wrong color, and wrong country”. Anu said she struggled with the culture at J.P Morgan and didn’t know basic things like dressing in a professional environment and how to behave in such settings. When asking for advice on where to shop for clothes, she was told of a boutique that shocked her with its insane prices. Anu then turned to Dress for Success, a charity that helps provide professional attire. In 2019, she received the Impact and Innovation award for her work with the charity.
Despite the adversity, Anu’s persistence and determination paved the way for success, she now leads a team of more than 165 professionals around the world. As the Co-Chair of the J.P. Morgan’s women network, Anu addresses the issues regarding gender imbalances through contributing to initiatives across the bank to help recruit, mentor and develop women in finance.
When asked about Anu, CEO Jamie Dimon said “M&A was traditionally a male bastion—often cigar-smoking men in suspenders—and now she is at the top of the field, because she is simply outstanding at what she does”. Today, Anu and her team advised domestic and intentional clients on nearly $1 trillion worth of transactions including M&A, leverage buyouts and divestitures.
