Managing Job quality and labour shortages
with AI/AM in long-term care
Long-term care (LTC) systems are under pressure from ageing populations, workforce shortages, and low productivity in a labour-intensive sector.
This international project investigates how Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially algorithmic management (AM), could help future-proof LTC by reshaping job design, work organisation, and relationships among managers, workers, care recipients, and families.
Focusing on Austria, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, and the UK, the research examines how AI tools—like automated rostering, recruitment systems, and performance monitoring—impact job and care quality. It explores whether these technologies enhance efficiency and empowerment or increase surveillance and work intensity.
Through comparative case studies and stakeholder engagement, the project aims to identify conditions under which AI can improve care outcomes and employment standards. It will generate new evidence on AI’s role in LTC management and refine job quality frameworks to reflect digital realities, informing European and national care policies.
