This project commenced only at the end of 1999. It aims to examine regional resistance to the global dynamic for liberalisation in agriculture. It will analyse the degree to which a new competing balance of forces in global agriculture--historically dominated by the US-EU relationship--maybe emerging. Consequently, the project will investigate other developments; especially agricultural production potential in the former Eastern bloc; the changing demand profile of food importing countries (e.g. the PRC); and the impact of technological change (especially bio-technology) on the global agribusiness. Research will be conducted via the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data (available through the European Commission and the USDA), and via a series of semi-structured interviews at the EU Commission, the USDA, the WTO, and with non state actors in the corporate world of agribusiness and agricultural NGOs.
