Abstract:

 

 

This project assesses the processes of China’s re-engagement with the regional and global economies, and the implications of these processes for the global political economy. The project proceeds from the assumption that it is fundamentally ahistorical to view contemporary events without first considering the impact and consequences of China’s rejection of the international system and international isolation under Mao Zedong. This project includes assessments of the linkage between economic interactions and security in East Asia, and the environmental dimension of China’s growth as an international economic force. The programme is intended to produce a book manuscript to be published by Routledge in 2001, in addition to providing empirical evidence from China for other research projects in the Centre.
