"Porn and Feminism" reading group by MAPS2.85Porn websites rank among the most visited websites globally with billions of visits every month. According to a study from 2018, 91.5% of men and 60.2% of women (ages 18-73) in the US reported having consumed pornography in the past month (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30358432/). The impact that porn has on feminist issues has been discussed by feminist philosophers for decades. We want to explore the relation between ‘Porn and Feminism’ by reading a couple of introductory texts together! By ‘exploring’ we mean to not take certain evaluative assumptions towards pornography for granted beforehand but to get familiar with some of the things that have been said in feminist debates.
We will start by reading the chapter “Talking to My Students About Porn” by Amia Srinivasan (contained in her 2021 book “The Right to Sex” and attached). After that, we will determine the readings successively which is also an opportunity to bring in your own wishes and suggestions.
Where and when: every second Tuesday, 4-5 pm (weeks 2, 4, perhaps 6, 8, 10); room S2.85 (in the Economics department very close to the Philosophy department). We will, accordingly, start next Tuesday, 14. January!
