Warwick Global Academy - our new departmental name

We’re pleased to announce that Warwick Foundation Studies has a new name: Warwick Global Academy. This change reflects the growing breadth and depth of the provision designed and delivered by the department, and our dedication to working with students from all over the world.

Following a consultation process with departments across the Faculty of Social Sciences, approval of the new name was provided first by Senate and then by Council in July 2025.

Warwick Global Academy includes a range of key global programmes: the Warwick International Foundation Programme, designed for international students who are preparing for undergraduate studies; Pre-sessional English and In-sessional English courses for those who need to meet English language requirements or wish to enhance their academic English and academic literacy during degree studies; the Warwick Summer School, for university students from across the globe many of whom gain credits to take back to their institutions; the Pre-University Summer School providing a taster of university life for 16-17 year old home and international students, and our valued Short Courses. We believe this new name more accurately captures the full range of opportunities we provide and signals our role as a gateway to academic success and global engagement at Warwick.

To celebrate the launch of our new name, staff recently gathered for an Away Day, where our Head of Department, Professor Nina-Anne Lawrence, outlined the strategy, vision and main priorities for the department for the coming year. There were also some celebratory cakes to mark the occasion!

Commenting on the new department name, Professor Nina-Anne Lawrence said,

"I am delighted to have the support of colleagues from across the University with our new name. The word ‘Global’ reflects our international focus whilst also encompassing home students in programmes such as the Summer School. We are a pan-university department, working with all faculties, which makes ‘global’ an appropriate and inclusive descriptor and the name also aligns with Warwick’s global nature and brand.”
We'll be hosting events throughout the 2025/26 academic year, as we celebrate not only our new name and a revised International Foundation Programme, but also our anniversary - 10 years as an academic department on campus. Events will be shared via insite and our networks - if you'd like to join our mailing list, please contact wga@warwick.ac.uk.
