Sustainable Cities: Urban Logistics

The demand for same and next day delivery, along with the rise in popularity for e-commerce, presents challenges to transport network, congestion levels and warehousing.

COCTA wins prestigious air traffic management award

As it has been announced at the World Air Traffic Management Congress 2019 in Madrid, the Horizon 2020 project "COCTA" (the Operational Research team had been led by Dr Arne Strauss) has won Jane's Innovation Award.
The award recognises achievements that raise the performance of air traffic management; it is open to entries globally from industry and academia alike.

Contenders were shortlisted and a winning entry in each category was selected by an independent panel of experienced judges from the SESAR Deployment Manager, EUROCONTROL, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Associations (IFATCA), and IHS Markit.

Keynote talk at Westminster

The Industry and Parliament Trust has invited Dr Arne Strauss as keynote speaker alongside Ian Clough, Managing Director, Network Logistics and Transport for DHL Supply Chain, to an event at Westminster on sustainable cities and urban logistics on 20 May 2019. The event is part of a series that brings together senior decion makers from industry, parliamentarians, and academics.

Topic: The World Bank estimates that 83% of the United Kingdom’s population lives in urban environments. As this figure rises the logistical networks required to service inhabitants, businesses and visitors become more complex. Coupled with the rise of e-commerce and consumer and business demand for same or next day delivery, it presents a major challenge to transport networks, congestion levels and warehousing. With the smooth running of urban logistical networks essential to the functioning of the United Kingdom economy, what are the short- and long-term innovations that could secure effectiveness?

COCTA shortlisted for Innovation Award

The COCTA project on using revenue management modelling in the context of air traffic management (Warwick team led by Dr Arne Strauss) has been shortlisted for the Jane's Innovation Award.

Jane's ATC Awards offer companies the opportunity to nominate innovative, field-proven technologies and projects from around the world (both industry and university research projects are eligible). Since 2001, Jane's has been rewarding the best projects in the ATM industry that have been moving air traffic management forward with innovation, technological, environmental, runway, enablement or equipment supply advancements.

Entries were open to organisations in all areas of the global ATC industry, be they national air navigation service providers, large-scale industry partnerships, or new entrants to the sector. Winners and shortlisted nominees will be recognised at a ceremony at the World ATM Congress in Madrid in March 2019.

New Fellows Appointed

Bo Chen, Professor of Operational Research and Management Science, have been awarded Fellows by the Academy of Social Sciences.

While Arne Strauss, Associate Professor of Operational Research, and Xuan Vinh Doan, Associate Professor of Operations, have been appointed Fellows by the Alan Turing Institute.
