Multilingualism and Diversity Connected Learning Community

The community is made up of a group of experts from leading universities across Europe, bringing interdisciplinary learning to explore key issues of Multilingualism and Diversity. We are building a community of students and academics alike, who are passionate about Multilingualism and want to explore the local relevance of global problems. Our goals are to champion diversity and cross-university collaboration, transform the learning experience, and contribute to building a new academic model.

We provide an inspiring and supportive learning environment to help students develop their skills and confidence with innovative pedagogies. Our community aims to bring students from different levels together to give them the chance to collaborate on projects and make global connections. We want to empower students and provide them with the opportunity to be more involved in their own learning experiences. This is why we have launched several pioneering activities, such as the possibility for students to design their module in Multilingualism. We have an exciting programme of activities ranging from courses and workshops to a student-led conference, so join us to be part of a dynamic and global community that is at the forefront of research in Multilingualism and Diversity!

Our Activities

A-la-carte Programme

Our community offers an exciting à-la-carte programme of activities leading to a EUTOPIA micro-credential.

This flexible formula enables students to mix and match activities in order to create their own personal programme, specifically tailored to their needs and preferences. Our programme includes:

  • short online courses from partner institutions (3-6 weeks)
  • a student conference.

Languages Week

Launched in 2023 by the Learning Communities’ 'Multilingualism and Diversity' and 'Text and Discourse Analysis', the EUTOPIA Languages WeekLink opens in a new window is a week-long celebration of languages, culture, and diversity across the Alliance!

It takes place annually in March, both online and and at participating campus, and includes film screenings, language tasters, roundtables, workshops, and many more activities revolving around languages, multilingualism, translation, and culture.

VUB Autumn School on Multilingualism

The VUB Autumn School, launched in 2024 by the EUTOPIA Communities 'Multilingualism & Diversity' and 'Text & Discourse Analusis', is a week-long research seminar which combines lectures, interactive sessions and workshops. It provides students with an opportunity to engage in research on multilingualism and to collaborate with peers from across the EUTOPIA partner institutions.

MultiDiv (15 CATS)

MultiDivLink opens in a new window is a specialised and highly intensive study programme for students and academic/non-academic stakeholders interested in Multilingualism, Diversity and Social Justice pedagogy, policy and research from a Linguistics, Modern Languages and Translation Studies angle. MultiDiv is a unique hub which brings together senior academics as well as UG (undergraduate) /PG (postgraduate) research developed through the formal curriculum and relevant extracurricular activities. It takes the form of an intensive, 3-week-long activity and involves workshops, data training and sessions on interpreting research for wider audiences, policy makers and the media most notably.

MultiDiv is, by design, relevant to curriculum content directly addressing issues related to multilingualism in society. MultiDiv brings together students from different universities, such as EUTOPIA partners and beyond, and it is an opportunity to develop a global network which can organically grow through the interests of its community.

EUTOPIA Module (15 CATS)

Our newly launched EUTOPIA module, 'Internationalisation, Language, and Learning: Global Perspectives (EUTOPIA)Link opens in a new window', enables students from the School of Modern Languages and Cultures who are not doing a year abroad to still benefit from an internationalisation experience.

Students design their own term of study from an à-la-carte menu of options offered by EUTOPIA partners. Students can choose between two different routes to fit their needs and interests. Both routes are assessed through attendance and a reflective paper.

  • Route A - Virtual engagement: students take 2 online micro courses each of 4-5 weeks . These may be from the same partner or 2 different partners.
  • Route B - In-person engagement: students spend 1 week at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium where they participate in the VUB Autumn School on Multilingualism with peers from partner institutions.
