EUTOPIA Learning Community on ‘Veganism vs. Animal Protein Consumption’

Invitation to Join the EUTOPIA Learning Community on ‘Veganism vs. Animal Protein Consumption’ and its Public Engagement Initiative

We are excited to invite students and researchers from across the EUTOPIA alliance to join our Learning Community, focused on the theme of ‘Veganism vs. Animal Protein Consumption’. This initiative aims to foster a collaborative network of engagement, generating valuable insights that open up existing narratives around the tensions and crises within the global food system.

As part of this community, we have begun planning a podcast series titled ‘Connecting Values: Food, Ethics and Sustainability’. This series will explore the following key themes, aiming to unpack the ethical, cultural, environmental and health-related dimensions of food consumption:

1. Values and Ethics

This theme delves into diverse ethical frameworks, examining how values and ethics influence decisions related to agricultural production and human food consumption. We will explore the ethical considerations that shape dietary choices and engage with different ethics of care to identify tensions and conflicts within food systems.

2.Relationality and Interconnection

This theme highlights the deep interconnections between humans, animals and nature. It will explore how actions benefiting one part of the system can create positive ripple effects on others, fostering a greater understanding of the relational dynamics that influence our food systems and broader ecological health.

3. Health and Nutrition

This theme engages with the health implications of dietary choices, such as plant-based diets. It will examine the health advantages as well as the barriers to reducing or avoiding animal protein consumption, alongside the broader impacts on both human and animal well-being.

4.Innovation and Transformation for Sustainability

This theme explores innovative solutions and scientific advancements that promote sustainability within food systems. We will examine alternatives protein sources, lab-grown meat, and cruelty-free products, as well as how these innovations can improve the welfare of both humans and animals, driving sustainable transformation.
