Celebrating the Success of EUTOPIA Languages Week

This year’s EUTOPIA Languages Week (2–6 March 2026) proved a vibrant success across the Alliance, with Warwick staff and students actively engaging in a rich programme of language, culture, and multilingualism activities delivered both online and across partner campuses. The week brought together participants from across EUTOPIA universities including 375 from Warwick, creating space for exploration, collaboration, and celebration of linguistic diversity.

Activities included film screenings, language tasters, roundtables, workshops, interactive sessions, and cultural experiences, all designed to highlight the power of multilingual communication and global connections. These events showcased the depth of expertise and enthusiasm across the EUTOPIA communities and reflected the growing momentum behind cross-institution collaboration.

A particular highlight was the student conference on “Intercultural Spaces, Languages and Identities,” hosted by Universitat Pompeu Fabra, where students presented original research exploring multilingual social spaces, intercultural communication, and identity. This work exemplified the Alliance’s commitment to fostering transdisciplinary learning and student-led knowledge creation.

At Warwick, one of the standout moments was the Translation Slam, which brought together a professional translator and an AI translation tool in a live head‑to‑head challenge. Competitors translated two short texts under time pressure, offering a unique opportunity for audiences to compare process and output. While AI demonstrated impressive speed, the event made clear that rapid results do not necessarily equate to quality: the professional translator’s nuanced understanding, cultural sensitivity, and ability to ensure accuracy and client‑ready phrasing underscored the irreplaceable expertise that human translators bring to the craft. The session sparked lively discussion about the future of translation, the evolving role of AI, and the enduring importance of human judgement in language work.

For Warwick, the success of EUTOPIA Languages Week forms an important part of One World Warwick, reinforcing our commitment to global engagement, linguistic and cultural diversity, and opportunities for staff and students to deepen their international experience. As we continue to strengthen partnerships across Europe and beyond, initiatives like EUTOPIA Languages Week highlight the positive impact of collaboration and community across borders.
