Partnership established with Uzbekistan funding body

The University of Warwick recently hosted representatives from the “El Yurt Umidi” Foundation, Uzbekistan. Professor Virinder Kalra, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Central and South Asia) welcomed the “El Yurt Umidi” Foundation’s Executive Director, Professor Gulnoza Ismailova and First Deputy Director Davron Abdurashidov for a series of meetings with staff to discuss collaboration between the two organisations, and a dedicated session with students funded by the “El Yurt Umidi” Foundation. During the visit an agreement was signed that will enable talented Uzbek students to study at Warwick, and provide new opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing with universities in Uzbekistan.

The “El-Yurt Umidi” Foundation for the Training of Prospective Personnel under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan was set up in 2018, its main objective is to educate Uzbekistan’s top professionals in the top 300 universities worldwide. The Foundation offers support funding to Uzbek students to undertake degrees at overseas universities, for staff mobility as visiting researchers / academics and for staff from a range of sectors to undertake short term internships overseas.

Thirteen high achieving Uzbek students currently enrolled at Warwick are beneficiaries of funding from the “El Yurt Umidi” Foundation and will return to Uzbekistan at the end of their studies to take up positions at local universities or public service organisations. Many of the students are already sharing their newly acquired knowledge with their compatriots in Uzbekistan via conference presentations and virtual workshops.

Professor Kalra commented “Warwick is delighted to collaborate with the “El Yurt Umidi” Foundation to achieve its aims of creating a team of overseas educated leaders and specialists who will contribute to the development of Uzbekistan. Establishing this partnership will enable more talented Uzbeks to study at Warwick and facilitate greater engagement between Warwick and universities in the region.”
