International recognition of the University’s support for Ukraine

We're proud to share that Warwick has received an international award recognising our staff and students' ongoing support for the people of Ukraine. The award for professionalism and mercy by the Order of St Panteleimon recognises ‘the unwavering solidarity with the people of Ukraine in the defence of freedom and human dignity’.

Professor Gwen van der Velden (Education Studies) accepted the award on behalf of the University, together with Dr Dmytro Chumachenko, Visiting Lecturer (Institute of Advanced Study).

Sharing her thoughts on the recognition, Gwen said:

It’s fantastic to see Warwick acknowledged in this way for the wide range of ways our community have been offering support. Colleagues and students have been involved in running specialist summer schools and leadership programmes, warehousing medical equipment awaiting transport to Ukraine, providing visiting lecturer opportunities, and building strong partnerships with Ukrainian universities. The Warwick Ukrainian Society (Students’ Union) and the Warwick-Ukraine-Belarus Hub have also played a significant role in offering support.

This award is a celebration of everyone involved, staff, students and partners, who continue to show commitment, compassion and practical support when it’s needed most.

The Order, originally rooted in Ukraine’s medical and humanitarian sphere, has grown into a global symbol of solidarity. This year’s ceremony took place at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Family in Exile in London, bringing together guests from UK charities, cultural organisations, and the higher education community.

As a University of Sanctuary, Warwick is deeply committed to supporting academics and students affected by conflict and displacement.

We’re honoured to receive this recognition.
