Makerere University Delegation Visits Warwick to Strengthen Research and Innovation Ties

The University of Warwick recently hosted a high-level delegation from Makerere University, Uganda, in a visit focused on advancing strategic collaboration in research and innovation.

The delegation engaged in a series of meetings with Warwick’s senior leadership, including representatives from International Strategy and Relations, the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) and the Research and Impact Services team. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, from research funding and governance to industry partnerships, research commercialisation and talent development.

Operational and executive staff from Makerere’s Research and Innovation Fund (Mak-RIF) participated in tailored sessions with Warwick colleagues, exploring best practices in research support, compliance, and digital learning. The visit also included a tour of Warwick’s Science Park and Innovation District, highlighting the university’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and digital strategy initiatives.

A key highlight of the visit was a networking lunch hosted by the Warwick Africa Hub, a community of academics and professional staff dedicated to strengthening Warwick’s engagement with African partners. The Hub facilitated rich discussions on shared research priorities, funding challenges, and opportunities for collaboration, reinforcing Warwick’s commitment to equitable and impactful partnerships across the continent.

Reflecting on the visit, Professor Dan Branch, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Africa), commented:

“It has been a real privilege to host our colleagues from Makerere University. This visit has not only strengthened our institutional ties but also opened exciting new avenues for collaboration in research, innovation, and capacity building. The energy and expertise shared across both teams have laid a strong foundation for future partnership between Warwick and one of Africa's most prestigious research universities."

The visit underscores Warwick’s commitment to fostering meaningful international partnerships and promoting global research impact through collaboration with leading institutions across Africa.
