Strengthening Global Ties: Warwick Joins Fudan’s 120th Anniversary Celebrations

On 27th May 2025 Fudan University celebrated 120 years since its foundation. Professor Sai Gu, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (East and Southeast Asia) attended a two day conference to mark the anniversary which included research seminars and roundtables.

Warwick has a well-established and impactful partnership with Fudan University. Earlier this year, we launched our inaugural joint seed fund to provide essential early-stage support for ambitious research projects that bring together diverse areas of expertise and explore innovative approaches.

Speaking at the event, Professor Gu said;

It is a great honour to join Fudan University in celebrating its 120th anniversary — a remarkable milestone for an institution that has long stood at the forefront of academic excellence and global engagement. Warwick is proud of our partnership with Fudan, built on shared values of innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to shaping a better future through research and education. We look forward to deepening our ties in the years ahead and continuing to work together to address the world’s most pressing challenges.

Fudan University was established in 1905 as Fudan Public School. It was the first institution of higher education to be founded by a Chinese person. The two characters, fù (“return”) and dàn (“dawn”) were borrowed from A Commentary on The Classic of History(《尚书大传·虞夏传), of which the part on the Yu and the Xia dynasties mentions: “Brilliant are the sunshine and moonlight, again the morning radiance returns at dawn.” In 1917, the institution was renamed Fudan University, which has been kept ever since.
