Warwick hosts Shanghai Jiao Tong University to explore new collaborative opportunities

The University of Warwick has a strong track record of academic collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Last week academics in the Faculty of Arts and the Centre for Applied Linguistics hosted a workshop with colleagues from SJTU’s Schools of Humanities and Foreign Languages, to further explore opportunities for closer collaboration in both teaching and research.

Established in 1896, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is renowned as one of the most prestigious and research-orientated universities in China. Over the last 5 years Warwick has been building closer interactions with SJTU, particularly in areas of mutual strength in humanities subjects and linguistics. This provides an exciting opportunity for Warwick and SJTU to form a long term partnership to support novel collaborations, enhancing the experience for our students and facilitating new interactive research areas. This partnership is built on the strengths of both institutions in interdisciplinary research.

University of Warwick History Professor Tim Lockley, who organised the workshop, said “We are delighted to welcome SJTU to Warwick. This workshop has given us a great opportunity to further understand how our specialisms complement one another and identify specific areas for further collaboration. We are looking forward to building a partnership with SJTU which adds real value to our researchers and students"

The Centre for Applied Linguistics (CAL) has had close links with SJTU for almost 10 years, building on the personal links with SJTU that their Director, Professor Helen Spencer-Oatey, has from teaching there for 7 years. Initially collaborating on the renowned College English Test which has 18 million candidates a year, CAL and SJTU are now planning joint teacher training courses for English teachers in rural areas. Professor Spencer-Oatey comments "We are delighted to deepen our collaboration with SJTU and are very proud to be working together on a project that will benefit people from some of the poorest areas of China."

Warwick is exploring the opportunity to develop Masters-level collaborations with SJTU, as well as early career researcher visits between the two universities.
