Chevening Annual Conference

In May 2023, 200 delegates attended Chevening’s Annual Conference, titled ‘Innovation and Collaboration around the World’, hosted by the University of Warwick. The delegates included speakers from the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), 165 Chevening scholars from universities across the UK, University staff, and alumni from the Chevening alumni network.

This one-day conference for Chevening scholars was a blend of scholar-led seminars, keynotes speeches, contributions from academics and professionals and networking opportunities.

Professor Chris Ennew OBE, Provost, said “it is an honour to host the Chevening conference, especially since Innovation is one of the four pillars of the University’s strategy. Excellence with purpose, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial energy have always been pivotal in helping Warwick stand out from the crowd.”

Warwick has a longstanding partnership with Chevening, hosting between 20 and 50 scholars per year. This academic year Warwick is hosting 24 Chevening scholars enrolled in ten different departments across the University. Many scholars pursue studies in WBS and WMG, but a number are enrolled in programmes in Economics, Education, Engineering, GSD, Interdisciplinary Methodologies, Law, LLL and PAIS. This year’s scholars represent the future

influencers and decision-makers from 19 countries: China, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Guinea, India, Kenya, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Mongolia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, South Africa, Syria, Uruguay and Vietnam.

Verlyndah Hodge, one of the Chevening scholars chosen to present at the conference said "being able to share my research and ideas and engage in thought-provoking conversations with fellow Chevening Scholars, was an amazing opportunity."

Closing the conference, Professor Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor, thanked the 23 Chevening scholars presenting their research and keynote speakers Alicia Herbert OBE, Director of Education, Gender and Equality and Special Envoy for Gender Equality at the FCDO, and Professor James Hayton from Warwick Business School.
