Retired staff celebrate Warwick’s 60th anniversary

Warwick Retired Staff Association Event

In October, former colleagues from across the University gathered as part of Warwick’s 60th anniversary celebrations to mark the occasion together.

The Retired Staff Association (RSA) hosted the event, bringing members back to campus to reconnect, share memories, and reflect on the University’s journey – while also looking ahead to the future.

The day began with a warm welcome from Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Stuart Croft, who shared his vision for the next chapter of Warwick’s story. Guests then enjoyed lunch at Scarman House, catching up with colleagues and swapping memories from their time at the University.

In the afternoon, speakers who had played key roles in shaping Warwick took attendees on a fascinating journey through the University’s history. Mike Shattock (Registrar, 1983–99) looked back at the early defining moments that shaped Warwick’s character. Professor Robert Dyson recalled the transformation of Warwick Business School in the 1980s, while Stuart Palmer reflected on a period that included the creation of Warwick Medical School and a visit from President Bill Clinton.

Denis Welchman (Head of Estate Projects, 2005–2008) shared insights into the campus’s growth, from the muddy fields donated in the 1960s to the thriving University seen today. Rosie Drinkwater, Warwick’s Group Finance Director, rounded off the talks with a look at the financial challenges and opportunities facing the University in the 21st century.

Professor Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Warwick, said: “Our retired colleagues played an essential role in shaping the University of Warwick into the community we are proud of today. It was wonderful to have so many familiar faces return to campus as we celebrated 60 years of learning, innovation and collaboration.

“Their legacy continues to inspire the next generation of staff and students who are writing Warwick’s next chapter.”

A highlight of the celebration was the presence of Lady Doris Butterworth, wife of Warwick’s founding Vice-Chancellor, Lord Jack Butterworth, who helped set the University on its path to excellence.

Malcolm Cooper, Chair of the RSA, said: “It was a delight to see so many of the staff from Warwick's pioneering era present to celebrate the university's 60th anniversary and share reminiscences. To be joined by Lady Doris Butterworth, the wife of the founding Vice-Chancellor, was the icing on the cake.”

The Retired Staff Association welcomes all retired staff and their partners. For more information about upcoming events, visit warwick.ac.uk/assoc/rsa.
