Warwick staff to compete in UK Corporate Games

Corporate Games logoEurope’s largest annual multi-sport festival for businesses and organisations is taking place in Coventry from the 5th-7th July and for the first time University of Warwick staff are taking part.

The 140 Warwick employees will compete for the University in Badminton, Basketball, Dragon boat racing, Cricket, Running, Soccer 6, Squash, Tennis, Volleyball, Golf, Karting, Netball, Poker, Swimming and Table tennis, several of which will happen on campus.

Other sports taking place include Hockey, Rugby 7s, Softball, Tenpin Bowling and Touch.

Department of Physics Research Fellow Aleksander Krupski has competed in several cross-country skiing competitions but says the Corporate Games will be the first time he has run 10km.

“I think it's a nice opportunity and great pleasure to represent the University of Warwick. It's the first time for me but I have competed several times in Worldloppet cross-country skiing over a distance of 10 km and 26 km. Training is going well at the moment!"

A staff and postgraduate netball team, established earlier in the year will also be competing on behalf of the University. Team member Katie Barlow, who works in the Student Admissions and Recruitment Office, says the Corporate Games are perfectly timed to give the team a focus for training and to get involved:

“Our training is going pretty well and our confidence is growing. We had our first match a few weeks ago in the Warwick Active Netball Tournament and now have friendlys lined up with Coventry City Council and Lloyds this month before we hit the Games."

Participating athletes will take part in a Grand Parade from Coventry University Square to Broadgate at 6.30pm on the evening of the 6 July.

Other Corporate Games participants include well-known organisations such as Ernst and Young, Vodafone, Asda and Intel and local companies like Jaguar Land Rover and Decathlon will also be bringing competitors.

The University of Warwick is an official partner of this year’s UK Corporate Games.
