New e-resources supporting campus teaching and research

Thanks to funding provided through the University's e-strategy, the Library now provides a range of exciting new e-resources in many different subject areas. These acquisitions will greatly enrich the range and quality of resources available for teaching and research purposes.

Highlights include a range of new full text content such as the Times Digital Archive, and important new journal back-runs in many subjects from ScienceDirect and JSTOR.

A complete list of the e-resources we have recently made available appears below. Further acquisitions are planned, and news about these will appear on the News section of the Library web site

America: History and Life

America: History and Life is a complete bibliographic reference to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. This extensive database covers over 2,000 journals published worldwide.

International Medieval Bibliography

The IMB provides a comprehensive, current bibliography of articles in journals and miscellany volumes (conference proceedings, essay collections or Festschriften) worldwide for the European Middle Ages (c. 400-1500).

JSTOR General Science and JSTOR Language and Literature Collections.

These recent additions to the JSTOR archive further enhance the importance of this digital journal archive service. Individual journals contained in these deals are available via the electronic journals page on the Library web site at:

Nature Online

An online version of the prestigious scientific journal. Extra features in this online version include an alerting service, and an advance online publication section which provides the latest research papers ahead of the print publication dates.

SciFinder Scholar

SciFinder Scholar is an electronic version of Chemical Abstracts. It retrieves information contained in databases produced by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) as well as in the MEDLINE database from the National Library of Medicine. SciFinder Scholar provides direct access to chemical literature and patents from 1907 to the present and is updated daily. It includes substance records and CAS Registry Numbers.

Before using SciFinder Scholar, you need to install a program on you own PC. Further details are available from:

ScienceDirect backfiles

We now have access to the important backfiles of many ScienceDirect electronic journals. This acquisition guarantees access to the back-files in perpetuity, and complements our subscription to the ScienceDirect current files. These titles appear in the alphabetical list on the Library Electronic Resources Journals web page:

The title list is the same as for our current subscription, but issues are now available back to Volume 1, Issue 1.

Times Digital Archive

Full page images of the Times for 1924 through 1954 are now available through the Times Digital Archive. When completed in late 2003, the archive will contain two centuries of the newspaper (1785 to 1985). Additional years are being added monthly. The database is comprehensive, and therefore includes advertising, book reviews, letters to the editor, and obituaries, as well as news articles.

The archive is keyword searchable and browsable by issue. Access is available from the Library Electronic Resources Newspapers page:

Women Writers Online: Texts 1400 - 1850

This Brown University (Providence, Rhode Island) project presents all WomenWriters Project (WWP) texts currently available online. All of the texts can be browsed, searched, and analysed using tools which provide access to the full SGML encoding.
