Students from the University of Warwick strutted down the catwalk to rapturous applause at a recent charity fashion show held in Leamington Spa Town Hall, Leamington Spa on Monday 10th May.

The show, organised by Warwick Volunteers, raised £877 in aid of the Coventry and Warwickshire Macmillan Appeal, which urgently needs to raise funds for cancer patients and their families in the local area. Over 150 people attended the event, which also included refreshments, a raffle with a wide variety of prizes, performances from the Student Dance Society ‘Street Vibe’ and an enticing chocolate stall from Thorntons.

The students modelled clothes from Fat Face, Dorothy Perkins, Burtons, D2 and Pilot and performed choreographed routines around a number of themes, including a beach party, Charlie’s Angels, Grease and even a section of designs from a fashion student. Jeff Leach from the University’s RaW radio station compered the event. Music was provided by Warwick Volunteers and featured songs from Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child and Madonna.

The evening was rounded off with a raffle and a number of tempting prizes, including cinema tickets, £30 of restaurant vouchers, beer, champagne and £20 of supermarket vouchers for Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Rachel Sheppard, Event Organiser and second year Management Science student, said: “It was a really fantastic evening. The models looked great and everyone really enjoyed themselves. It was really good to have the loan of the Town Hall for free as we were able to raise even more money.”

The show was just one of the many projects run by Warwick Volunteers. The society has over 2000 members and gives staff and students the opportunity to become active in the local community. They currently run over 35 projects, ranging from work with young offenders to volunteering at Coventry City Farm. The wide variety of projects makes it easy to find something to fit with your lifestyle and level of commitment.
