One World Week 2009

One World Week Fashion ShowThe world's largest student-run international event - One World Week - returns to campus between the 23rd and 31st January for its annual celebration of our world's cultural mosaic.

Now in its 14th year, the nine day event offers an array of interactive entertainment ranging from thought provoking discussions in the One World Forum to nail bitingly tense drama from One World Arts and the blood and thunder of the One World Sports tournaments.

Each day, the action starts early and continues long past sundown as One World Festival celebrates the international traditions and festivities of cultures worldwide, with passionate entertainment ranging from the glamorous catwalk of the Fashion Show to the raw energy and enthusiasm of the Carnival.

One World Arts

Grammy award winning hip-hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari tops the bill at the World Music Concert, accompanied by student performances that fuse music with art, dance and theatre.

One World Forum

Dr. Gerd Leipold, Executive Director of Greenpeace International will be speaking on climate change, giving a twist to the talk by discussing a unique southern perspective on the subject.  Furthermore there will be a talk on the Credit Crunch with speakers Dr Andrew Sentance, one of the Bank of England's nine-member Monetary Policy Committee and Charles R Morris, the best selling author of A Trillion Dollar Meltdown.

One World Festival

The festival highlights different regions of the world on each day: AustralAsia; the Americas and Caribbean; Europe; the Middle East and Africa; and the UK.

Dig out those fetching lycra cycling shorts for a recreation of the Tour De France, wax lyrical about Mozart in the Cafe Vienna, try your hand at the elegant art of Arabic calligraphy, get up close and personal with tropical snakes or don your whites for a sushi masterclass. These workshops and many more are available at the festival.

One World Sports

It's Judgement Day part two as the rugby league and union teams square up to each other for the second year running. Exponents of the unrelenting martial art Thai boxing will be putting on an exhibition as will the more gentile T'ai Chi experts.

One World Week is an independent organisation with a non-for-profit initiative that aims to stimulate personal development and inspire a view based on acceptance and appreciation of the world’s cultures.

On previous occasions One World Week has had the honour of listening to speakers such as Professor Raghuram Rajan (Chief Economist, IMF), Stephen Tindale(Executive Director, Greenpeace UK), Trevor Nelson (MTV presenter and BBC Radio 1 DJ) and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (Founder, Art of Living Foundation).
