International Symposium on Poetry and Medicine
Warwick is to host an International Symposium on Poetry and Medicine in the Arts Centre on Saturday 10 April. The symposium will include a range of speakers, talks and topics, and also the announcement of the winner of the Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine 2010.
The Symposium has been designed for anyone interested in arts, poetry and medicine including amateur and professional poets, individuals or health care professionals interested in how poetry may help patients, their friends and families during acute or long-term illness, academics and undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Symposium topics will include:
- Poetry in medical settings (including oncology, HIV-AIDS, heart disorders, childhood illness)
- Doctor poets (William Carlos Williams)
- Poets inspired by personal illness and medical themes (Jiri Wolker)
- Poetry in the consultation
- Creative health professionals
- Medical inspirations for poetry (including anatomy; poisoning in Shakespeare's writings)
Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine 2010
The Symposium will also include the award of the International Hippocrates Prize – a medical poetry competition with two categories: an 'open' category which was open to all and an ‘NHS’ category open to National Health Service employees and health students.
A shortlist of six finalists was recently announced. In the 'Open' category, are Sian Hughes from Banbury, Pauline Stainer from Suffolk and CK Stead from Auckland, New Zealand. In the ‘NHS’ category, are Wendy French and Alex Josephy from London and Edward Picot from Kent. Broadcaster and journalist James Naughtie, NHS Medical Director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh and poet Dannie Abse will present the award.

Standard delegates:
- Early registration fee - £50 (including lunch and other refreshments)
- Late registration fee - £60 (received on or after 22nd March).
Commended and short-listed Hippocrates Prize entrants; Graduate research students (MPhil/PhD students, Masters degree students etc); Undergraduate students; Other health professional students:
- £25 all day (including lunch and other refreshments) / free for all afternoon sessions
The International Poetry and Medicine Symposium and the 2010 Hippocrates Prize are supported by the Institute of Advanced Study at the University of Warwick and by the National Fellowship of Postgraduate Medicine.
