Students from Warwick Medical School (WMS) persuaded 24 volunteers from University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW), including six orthopaedic surgeons, and WMS to pose for a charity calendar.

The students behind the project were Andrea Norman, Mark Prentice, Jo Shannon-Lowe and Gwen Bromley. They devised alternative careers for their calendar models and encouraged them to dress the part. In particular, the orthopaedic surgeons were transformed into topless workmen, picture opposite! Other volunteer’s included WMS’ Associate Dean, Professor Ed Peile, who posed as a potato peeler and four UHCW consultant surgeons dressed up as butchers.

The students came up with the idea as a joke, initially, but interest was high and the project went ahead. “We were involved in the medical school revues and we came up with the idea when we were painting scenery for them at 3am. It was just a crazy suggestion which suddenly became a possibility.” – Andrea Norman, organiser.

500 copies of the calendar have been printed and so far 430 are sold. They cost £5 each and the funds currently raised stands at £1,990. The beneficiaries are the Coventry Myton Hospice Appeal and the UHCW Arts and Environment Fund.
