Professor Akwugo Emejulu recognised with fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences

Professor EmejuluWarwick Professor of Sociology Dr Akwugo Emejulu has been recognised as one of the UK’s leading social scientists with the award of Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Fellowships are awarded to academics who have not only made an outstanding contribution to research, but who have also applied their expertise to address current challenges in policy, education, society or the economy.

Professor Emejulu’s work examines racial, ethnic and gender inequalities in Europe and the United States. She also explores how women of colour activists organise and mobilise for social change. Her work reaches beyond academia as she works closely with policymakers, practitioners and activists to devise strategies to combat inequalities.

Professor Emejulu joined the University of Warwick in February 2017. Before entering academia, she worked in a variety of grassroots roles—as a community organiser, a trade union organiser and a participatory action researcher—in both the United States and in Britain.

Commenting on her Fellowship, Professor Emejulu said: “I am delighted to be a Fellow of the Academy. Particularly during this time of multiple crises, I hope that I can help advance our understandings of complex inequalities and offer practical solutions to address our most pressing social problems."

Professor Roger Goodman FAcSS, Chair of the Academy said: “We are extremely proud to welcome 73 new Fellows to the Academy who are so highly accomplished and driving social and economic transformation across societies. They have been selected following a robust review by their peers and have been recognised for the excellence of their work and its applications in academia, business and the public sector.

“This remarkable community of experts has used the social sciences to deliver public benefit in the realms of social, economic and environmental policy, and in higher education, regional development, government and law. I offer our new Fellows many congratulations and look forward to collaborating with them.”

The Academy of Social Sciences is the national academy of academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences. Its mission is to promote social science in the United Kingdom for the public benefit.
