Virtual reality, vortex cannons & submarines: Warwick Engineering Day

Cutting-edge virtual reality technology and an original 1985 Sinclair C5 – you can get your hands on both of these (and much more amazing technology) at the University of Warwick’s Engineering Day later this month.

Children of all ages (4 to 104) are invited to Warwick’s School of Engineering on Saturday 17 March to go behind the scenes and have a go with gadgets like an immersive Virtual Reality experience taking you inside complex molecules, a mind-controlled Scalextric set, an electronic nose and a vortex cannon that blows smoke rings – just to name a few!

There will be tours of the labs where world-changing research is happening right here in Coventry, as well as activities and competitions with prizes, such as bridge building, tunnelling, and engine disassembly.

Witness the power of a wind tunnel!

Take a look at the Warwick Submarine, a cutting-edge human powered pedal submarine that students from Warwick design and build to compete internationally.

Friendly engineers will be on hand to tell you how they’re helping to keep people alive, how they’re making bridges, buildings and infrastructure stronger, improving our gadgets, and making cars and planes better.

Christopher James, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Warwick and organiser of the event, commented:

“We are excited to be hosting the second Engineering Day at Warwick, after the success of last year.

“We have some of the favourites from last year as well as some new stands, all of which show the breadth of Engineering – what is more, we have excited students and staff who are all passionate about engineering and all working on different aspects of cutting edge technology.”

Any girls and boys who are curious about engineering - electrical, mechanical, civil, computer, biomedical (or more!) - can find out what it’s all about, and even how they can become tomorrow’s engineers.eng3
