Premier Squash League

The University of Warwick/Kenilworth (WARKEN) squash team have produced the longest winning streak in their history, following a 3-2 away win over the defending champions Nottingham.

Iker Pajares, Nick Wall and Mahesh Mangaonkar secured victories for WARKEN in their games, with Mark Fuller narrowly losing to his Nottingham opponent and Grace Gear putting in an impressive debut.

WARKEN’s victory over Nottingham was their fourth consecutive victory in their first season competing in the Premier Squash League (PSL).

Speaking after their victory Steve Townsend, WARKEN’s Head Coach, said of the team’s performance:

“Iker’s match clinching performance tonight typifies the spirit of this team, and the whole-hearted effort given by every single member of this squad. That’s his best ever win, by some distance, and it was well deserved. No one will be looking forward to playing us on this form. I’m very proud of them!”

Competing in the PSL’s Division A, the WARKEN team now holds a lead over Pontefract - who they will face at their Crackley Lane home venue on the 13th March and which looks set to be the decider of who reaches the play-offs.

The WARKEN team includes a number of the world’s top players, including Ali Farag (World no. 3), Iker Pajares (ranked 55th in the world) and Sarah-Jane Perry (ranked 2nd in England and 8th in the world).

The PSL is a tournament organised by England Squash where clubs from around the country vie for the title of National Champions.

The competition is split into two Divisions, A and B, with the top two teams progressing to semi-finals and a final staged at the National Squash Centre.

Commenting on WARKEN’s success Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Director of Sport & Active Communities at the University of Warwick, said:

“What an amazing result. Our team entered the league for the first time never dreaming that they would do so well. To topple the reigning PSL champions on their home ground just shows the sheer drive, determination and resilience our players have. Our next home match against Pontefract will be absolutely buzzing. Top quality squash at its best.”
