Ceri Richards was born in a mining village near Swansea, his father was a tin-plate worker who passed on to his son a passion for music and poetry which were to be a constant inspiration to him throughout his career as an artist. Richards was among a group of British artists influenced by Surrealism in the 1930s and early 1940s. He was a versatile and original artist, his work encompassing a range of styles and imagery as well as media. In addition to his paintings, he produced relief constructions, lithography, book illustrations, murals and costumes and scenery for opera.

'Arrangement for Piano', 'Girl at Piano' and 'Blue Shadow' are good examples of Richards' lyrical print-making which perhaps found its greatest inspiration during the 1940s from the poetry of his compatriot, Dylan Thomas.
