Charleston Market by David Gentleman
|
David Gentleman has made architectural studies a regular part of his output and is renowned in particular for his drawings and prints of historic buildings in Britain. In this case the subject is a market hall in South Carolina, USA which he drew during a visit to America in the 1970s. It focuses on the strong shapes of the market building, the arches, beams and pillars, to create a powerful sense of perspective and order, the two figures of market traders remaining incidental. A copy of this print is part of the Tate Gallery's collection of the artist's work.
