Preliminary Design based on the University coat of arms by David West
|
One of four designs for panels based on the University of Warwick's Coat of Arms. David West's carvings were exhibited in an exhibition entitled 'Castles in the Air' in the Mead Gallery in November 1987 and the University of Warwick commissioned him to do some work for Radcliffe House, on a University theme. These first ideas were very specifically based on the University's Coat of Arms, they include the elephant and castle of Coventry and the bear and ragged staff of Warwickshire. The artist was encouraged however, to take a broader view of the University campus on its green field site, and the work which resulted is in the Lounge.
