Fred Uhlman
Born: 1901. Died: 1985. Nationality: German.
Fred Uhlman was born in Stuttgart; he trained as a lawyer and worked for the German Labour Party. In 1933 he fled to Paris where he began to paint. The primitive qualities of his paintings attracted considerable critical attention. In 1938 he settled in Britain and despite his anti-Nazi activities was interned in 1940. After the war his reputation as a painter grew, he established himself as a leading member of the London Group.
He was an avid collector of African sculpture and donated his collection to the University of Newcastle in 1984.
