Although he lived and worked in London, Fred Uhlman spent summers in Croesor Valley, Gwynnedd, Wales. This is a deceptively simple picture of his home there which he valued for its peace and remoteness.

In an interview with Frank Whitford, towards the end of his life, Uhlman commented: "I live here like a monk, these days I hardly even go to exhibitions. People are terrified of admitting that they like my work. It's so unfashionable to see anything in primitive or naive painting."
