Much of Clarke's work is concerned with the relationship between his sculptures and their environment. In Slab and Bar Relief he chose to work in mono-chromatic grey tones to focus attention on the surface of the sculpture and encourage the viewer to examine its architectural surroundings. On close inspection you can see the imprint of the polystyrene shapes from which the sculpture is cast. Clarke's relief is inspired by Chinese calligraphy and suggests the skeletal armature of buildings.
