Playing in the Street by George Chapman
|
George Chapman began his artistic career by painting the Essex countryside. However during the war he visited the Rhondda Valley in Wales which gave his work new direction. He described his association with the mining communities here as a 'love affair'. His name became well known following a BBC Monitor television programme in 1961. Huw Weldon's script about George Chapman was later published. This scene shows people emerging into the street after heavy rainfall. The white spaces left by the unbitten plate suggest that the road surface is lit with a watery light that contrasts with the darkness of the architecture around it.
