Much of Ghisha Koenig's work featured people at work and she made many studies of factory workers in South East England. She worked mainly in relief using bronze or terracotta, making individually sculptured pieces showing workers and machinery which would then be assembled into a composition before firing or casting. Blue Shop 1 depicts a number of women working at ITT, a telephone manufacturing company. Each figure is contained within her own space and absorbed in her task. There is some irony in the private, separate physical settings within which the women work and the interactive, communicational nature of the items they produce.
