Untitled by Gillian Ayres

Ayres is an abstract artist who manipulates form and colour to evoke different feelings and emotions. In the 1960s she saw photographs of Jackson Pollock painting on the floor and became interested in the physical act of painting.

By making prints, an artist can produce many images from the same screen. This can become a mechanical process but Ayres avoids repetition by adding hand painted colour making each print unique and spontaneous. In these works Ayres uses the same basic design but different colours in each work. As a result the two pictures look different and invite different responses from us. Ayres often leaves her work untitled encouraging the viewer to engage directly with the formal qualities of the work.
