Mrs Smith in the Garden by Ivy Smith

The main subject matter in Ivy Smith's work is people whom she depicts with characteristically firm lines and clear forms. In composing her pictures she instinctively thinks in terms of mass, shape and colour and conventional perspective is sometimes sacrificed. "People and things get twisted and turned, simply because I want them to be that shape on the canvas . . . My backgrounds may be tipped all over the place and things shoved around so that the relationships of the people and objects meet my compositional needs." (Interview in 'Spiked' magazine, 2004)
