Born in Cleethorpes, Maltby studied sculpture at Leicester College of Art from 1956 - 9 and teacher training with etching and pottery at Goldsmith's from 1959 - 60.  He worked with David Leach at the Lowerdown Pottery in 1962 and in 1964 established his own pottery at Stoneshill in Devon.  He produced a wide range of domestic oxidised stoneware, but since 1976 has only made individual pieces.
