Trying to find where here is by John Newling

Trying to find where here is by John Newling

Commissioned from the artist 2018.

This work was part of a commission that includes the sculpture installed in Tocil Wood 'Our Shadows Alone touched you Trying to Find Where Here IsLink opens in a new window' . It was created from pulped, composted copies of letters that John wrote to nature over 81 days, entitled Dear Nature. Once the compost was ready, it was used to grow Moringa Oleifera saplings. These can be seen dried, pressed and attached to the surfaces of the work. The paper upon which the saplings sit, was also produced from the soil, in effect resurrecting the letters and at the same time enabling new life. The choice of Moringa Oleifera is significant as it is a drought resistant tree, considered to have many health benefits.
