Langlands and Bell studied at Middlesex Polytechnic from 1977-80.

Their work explores the systems that are deployed to facilitate and regulate our lives, from prisons to flight paths. A major solo exhibition was held at the Serpentine Gallery, London in 1996.

They have been artists-in-residence at Pallant House, Chichester 2002 and occupants of the Artists' House at Roche Court, Salisbury in 2001. In 2002 they were selected by the Imperial War Museum to be the artists who addressed the war in Afghanistan.
