Library by Nancy Davenport

This work is from a series of photographs taken in unnamed universities in the USA and Canada. They depict examples of 'New Brutalist' architecture and convey an uneasy tension between optimism and aftermath. 'Library' shows an unpeopled wasteland strewn with litter - discarded anti-Iraq war leaflets - making an ironic comment on the failure of political opposition.

Purchased from Nancy Klagsbrun Gallery, New York, 2008. The photograph is No. 2 from an edition of five.

'Library' was included in the Mead Gallery exhibition 'Campus' in 2005, a collaboration between the Mead and the John Hansard Gallery, financially supported by Arts Council England.
