Drawing on influences from Matisse, Braque and Léger, Caulfield developed a characteristic style that uses strong black outlines and areas of flat colour. For subject matter he often takes mundane, everyday things which are depicted with extreme economy and personal detachment, reinterpreting the commonplace.

The screenprinting technique suits Caulfield's purposes well, producing images in which the distractions of surface texture can be avoided.
